Can I design my own boots?
Absolutely. That’s part of the value of a custom made pair of boots. I’ll guide you on leather choices, designs, heel and toe styles, etc., and you’ll get a sketch of the design before any work begins.

How do I choose a boot design?
Take a look at my Gallery page for inspiration. You can also look through published books, though I will not make an exact copy of another boot maker’s design. The best place to start is by giving me a call.

How much will my boots cost?

How do your prices compare to other boot makers?
I am able to price my boots very competitively because I am not in a storefront or a high-rent location such as the east or west coasts.

How long does it take to get a finished pair of custom boots?
Delivery time is typically 8 to 10 weeks, though I sometimes have a waiting list. A typical pair of custom boots takes about 40 hours of hands-on working time. Complex designs can take up to 100 hours.

How do I get measured for custom boots?
A self-measuring chart and instructions are available on the “Order” page or through e-mail However, it is always best to be measured in person.

Is the fit guaranteed?
If you were measured by me in person, the fit is guaranteed. If you sent in a measuring template, the boots are guaranteed to the fit measurements you provided.

How will my finished boots fit?
Your finished boots will break in easily and quickly. They should fit your feet well, right from day one, and shouldn’t hurt, rub or slip. Over time they will mold to your feet for a truly custom feel.

Do finished boots need adjustments?
About 10 percent of boots need further adjustments. We can do this by mail and phone.

How long will my boots last?
Provided you have your boots repaired when needed and take reasonable care of them, they should last you for many years, even with frequent wearing.

Are custom boots returnable?
No, except in very limited circumstances. You’ll find this is the case with all custom boot makers. We work hard to make sure you’ll love your boots before the work begins.

Can I get boots made from exotic materials?
Style and design are more meaningful to me than the hide. I enjoy challenges much more than making simple, standard boots. But I won’t use any kind of endangered species – never elephant, and only farm-grown alligator, ostrich, anything exotic. I have no interest in encouraging poachers by buying endangered leathers.

How are custom boots different from store-bought boots?
Factory boot makers cut corners in many ways. They don’t always use top quality materials. Mexican-tanned leathers, for example, are typically dry. So they don’t age well. And factories often use cardboard inside the sole and heel.

A good custom boot maker uses wooden pegs in the soles because they expand and contract with the leather. Factories, if they use pegs at all, use brass. Brass pegs don’t absorb moisture, so when the leather expands moisture gets in around the brass and rots the leather.

A lot of little things are never done in factories which are critical to the fit and feel of a boot. A key thing is that hand-made boots are stretched twice, each time in a different direction, while being made. Factory made boots are not, so they end up stretching on your feet and they get sloppy-fitting over time – possibly a short time, depending upon the quality of the hide.

With cowboy boots, you really do get what you pay for. My customers want the fit, quality and the artistry that you can only get with a custom-made boot.
